Batman Arkham Origins "Invisible Predator Online" Multiplayer Trailer

When it launches in October 25th, Batman: Arkham Origins will be the first chapter in the critically acclaimed Arkham series to feature multiplayer. Entitled Invisible Predator Online, the mode is not being developed by WB Montreal but rather by UK studio Splash Damage.

In the mode, players can take on the role of one of three different groups: The Heroes (Batman and Robin) Bane's Elite Thugs (up to three players) and Jokers Elite Thugs (up to three players). Those who play the heroes group will get an experience similar to the single player campaign, with the exception that the enemies you encounter will by other players as opposed to NPC's and you will not be able to engage in fisticuffs though you will stay have access to Batman's gadgets. The objective is to utilize stealth and takedowns to fill an intimidation meter which will cause both groups to retreat.
"We wanted this tension with the hunter/hunted mechanic," says Creative Director at Splash Damage Alastair Cornish. "If Batman's primary method of engagement was to just run in and club people, a) that's not very Batman and b) it's not that tense or rewarding.

"So we worked out a clever system with the scoring, so you would vary your takedowns and be patient and not just go in swinging, because that's not Batman. The whole idea is to instill fear and intimidation into players."

While controlling the other two groups, the game morphs into a third-person shooter where both enemy factions are trying to take out the other while avoiding the hero characters. They will be able to use a detective vision tool similar to Batman, and if certain conditions are met the group leader (Bane or Joker) will be come playable. During a match, the group leader will call their followers to enter into the arena and whoever makes it there first assumes of the leader character. These characters are more powerful than the thugs, but can be killed and do not respawn.

Cornish stated that those who play as the thug characters will be able to customize their features in areas such as body type, facial hair, weapons, face paint and clothing.

"It really came from thinking of the Invisible Predator Online and what that might be like," he said. "So the heroes' perspective was quite straightforward in terms of how they play, [but with the thugs], sometimes you can see things moving behind you just as Batman is about to grab you."

"It's been interesting seeing people behaving like the AI," Cornish said. "We had players working through a map as a team, and the guy at the front said to his teammates, 'OK, I've got the front. You've got my back, right?' And his teammate said, 'Right. Can you see anything?' "No, I can't see anything.' And they kept walking through a corridor and the guy at the front said, 'You still got my back, right? Guys? Guys?' And just as he turned around he saw the feet of his buddy zip up into the darkness as Batman did the inverted takedown.

"All hell broke loose and he just freaked out and started running everywhere. When we saw that, we thought, that's absolutely perfect."

Nvidia CloudLight: A system for amortizing indirect lighting in real-time rendering

We introduce CloudLight, a system for computing indirect lighting in the Cloud to support real-time rendering for interactive 3D applications on a user's local device. CloudLight maps the traditional graphics pipeline onto a distributed system. That differs from a single-machine renderer in three fundamental ways. First, the mapping introduces potential asymmetry between computational resources available at the Cloud and local device sides of the pipeline. Second, compared to a hardware memory bus, the network introduces relatively large latency and low bandwidth between certain pipeline stages. Third, for multi-user virtual environments, a Cloud solution can amortize expensive global illumination costs across users. Our new CloudLight framework explores tradeoffs in different partitions of the global illumination workload between Cloud and local devices, with an eye to how available network and computational power influence design decisions and image quality. We describe the tradeoffs and characteristics of mapping three known lighting algorithms to our system and demonstrate scaling for up to 50 simultaneous CloudLight users.

Prince of Persia The Shadow and the Flame for Android and iOS Launch Trailer

Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame is a platform game released by Brøderbund in 1993.

It received an HD remake for smartphones and tablets for iOS and Android in 2013 as Prince of Persia: The Shadow and The Flame featuring revamped graphics and sound, virtual gamepad and a gameplay easy to handle but challenging to master.

Gameplay

Similar to the first Prince of Persia, the character explores various deadly areas by running, jumping, crawling, avoiding traps, solving puzzles and drinking magic potions. Prince of Persia 2 is, however, more combat-heavy than its predecessor. In the first game, enemies appear only occasionally and are always alone, while in the sequel, up to four enemies may appear at once, sometimes flanking the player, and may even be instantly replaced by reinforcements when they are killed. As in Prince of Persia, the trick is to complete the game under a strict time limit that passes in real time. Lives are unlimited, but time cannot be regained (except by reverting to a previously saved game). In other areas, more significant improvements have been made. The graphics are far more complex than the simple look of the game's predecessor, the areas explored are larger, and the variety of backdrops is greater.
Key Features
  • Rich and immersive atmospheres in various state-of-the-art enviroments
  • Intuitive and dynamic gesture-based touch controls
  • Smooth & acrobatic platforming
  • Multiple enemy based combat with a slice of tactics
  • New weapons & powers to acquire
  • Explore 14 levels to unravel the story
  • GameCenter Leaderboards (iOS)

Prince of Persia The Shadow and the Flame is available now for $2.99

Another new feature is called “Missions”, where players can set up missions/tasks for other players to complete, such as getting a certain amount of tank kills in a round, etc.
The new trailer also showcases some more footage of the Battlefield 4 Commander feature, which can be played both on a regular system, and on a tablet like an iPad.
The trailer also revealed a brand new Battlefield 4 map, which you can see below. It’s a snow map that reminds us a lot of the Port Valdez map found in Bad Company 2.

Splinter Cell Blacklist - Ghost, Panther, Assault Trailer

Ubisoft is back with new footage from Splinter Cell Blacklist. You’ll see some new gameplay here as Patrick Redding walks us through the section of gameplay three times? Why three? Because there are three different ways to play the upcoming title. Blacklist lets you choose to play one of three play styles, the Ghost, Panther, and Assault. All three styles are shown here, and they are each distinct with their own unique features.
Ghost mode is non-lethal, Sam’s techniques and skill set will help him sneak past enemies without being detected. This means that the use of guns will be rare, and many of your enemies will remain alive, making it more difficult to manoeuvre around the map. Panther mode will require a lot of time in the dark as well, but Sam will specialize in fatally eliminating his foes. He’ll use the shadows to stalk his prey and pounce when he spots a good opportunity… like a panther. There isn’t too much to say about the Assault mode, it’s designed for players that like to run-and-gun. I particularly like how it displays your last seen position, and depending on the AI, the feature could be extremely fun. You will be granted points on your performance in relation to the play style you choose to use, so you’ll want to stick to one method of progressing through a stage.
I think the inclusion of three play styles is a brilliant move, many people are deterred from the Splinter Cell series because they dislike the emphasis on stealth; the assault mode could potentially fix this. Having three ways to play also increases the game’s replay value, die hard fans will be granted a fresh new experience with each different play style.

Splinter Cell is due for August 20, 2013.
