Inside Unreal Engine 4 - Layered Materials Demo

Layered Materials

Developers are increasingly gravitating toward physically-based shading for high-end film and game production because it allows them to more easily author beautiful, realistic materials that hold up under all sorts of lighting conditions. Unreal Engine 4’s new shading model and materials workflow, as seen in the Infiltrator demonstration, offers a welcome reprieve from the tedious, expensive methods of the past.

Epic’s new materials pipeline helps artists leverage the power of physically-based shading in a visually friendly way. Materials are easier to implement than ever before, with support for numerous content creation methods that provide equally stunning results in-engine.

UE4 materials take advantage of node-based visual scripting, and the engine is designed so that desired changes can be propagated throughout the game world in real time. Whether a surface is constructed with one material or built via the layered method described in the video below, materials in UE4 are kind to game performance, look fantastic, and give artists total control over aesthetics.

In the video above, the tricycle on the left contains eight individual material elements, with five unique materials placed within those slots. The one on the right utilizes material layers, which blends materials together to a single asset that can be applied, shared and reused as needed. Developers can use the single material approach, layered materials, or a combination of the two depending on their preference.

This evolution in materials is especially significant because layers can now be painted on at the pixel level, as opposed to the traditional method of applying changes to individual polygons. This can save loads of man hours, especially because UE4 assets can be edited, saved, and shared on the fly.
Since materials can now be mapped per-pixel, artists have the ability to change that mapping at runtime. This technique yields materials that are inherently simpler because they can be created faster and are easier to edit down the pipeline, if necessary.

Lastly, the mask that defines each material layer’s placement can itself be modified and animated during gameplay. The potential applications that take advantage of this perk are limitless: Consider torn fabric exposing the skin beneath, or streaming liquid across a character’s flesh. Artists can even simulate character morphing by switching to a completely new type of material, such as shifting skin to steel or chrome – all changing at runtime, and all while maintaining fast and efficient editability for artists. We hope you enjoyed our first entry in the series. Stay tuned for new videos from our developers!

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Launch Trailer

“Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons” takes a novel approach to cooperative gaming.  Rather than splitting up control of its heroes – the titular two sons – between multiple players like most co-op games, “Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons” tasks you with controlling both simultaneously, using the left and right analog sticks, to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles.
Developed by Starbreeze Studios and published by 505 Games, “Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons” tells the story of two sons who set out on an epic journey to find the Water of Life for their ailing father.  You will need to guide both brothers at the same time, and solve an array of complex puzzles that require careful coordination, employing each of the brothers’ unique abilities.
For example, the first puzzles we encountered in our preview had us passing through a field guarded by an angry dog.  We ran the younger brother halfway across the field, climbed to safety on a haystack and began taunting the dog. The dog ran over to growl at the younger brother, opening up a clear path for the older to sprint to the end. Once there, we used the older brother to distract the dog, so the younger had a clear shot to join his sibling.
The next puzzle was more complicated and required experimenting with the brothers’ specific traits.  We needed to lower a drawbridge and get both brothers to the other side of a river, where a flock of sheep waited. The only way to activate the bridge was to run on a nearby wheel. We quickly discovered that using the younger brother to keep the bridge lowered enabled the older, stronger brother to carry a sheep back across the river. After that, we deposited the sheep into the wheel, which lowered the bridge again and allowed the brothers to continue on their way.
Controlling both brothers using separate analog sticks and triggers felt natural after a few minutes, and solving the game’s introductory puzzles was a rewarding challenge. According to the developers, though, our preview was just the tip of the iceberg. A host of significantly more intricate puzzles, and even boss fights, await the two brothers as their adventure takes them through the game’s lush, fantasy world full of magical allies and deadly monsters.

Two Brothers. Two Thumbsticks. One Journey

“Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons” launches Aug. 7 for 1,200 Microsoft Points

Paradox Interactive Announces War of the Vikings

Sharpen Your Axes, Prepare Your Armor, and Groom Your Beard for a New Close Combat Experience

Paradox Interactive, a publisher of games and a cultivator of epic facial hair, today announced War of the Vikings, an all-new multiplayer game built upon the technology that drives Paradox’s medieval squad combat title War of the Roses. Developed by Fatshark, War of the Vikings is a new standalone entry into the War franchise that will pull players into the brutal and bloody Viking Age, challenging them to design a personalized warrior and sack England as a mighty Norseman – or defend it as a brave Saxon. Featuring intense close-quarters combat, authentically inspired settings and weaponry, rich customization options, and large-scale 64-player battles, War of the Vikings will add a new unforgettable experience to Paradox’s close combat arsenal.
War of the Roses was a fantastic experience for us to launch, and as it’s evolved over time, eventually growing into its current Kingmaker edition, we’ve been inspired many times over by the possibilities of the close-combat genre,” said Gordon Van Dyke, Executive Producer for the War of the Roses franchise. “It’s clear to us that that there are many more experiences we can share with our players, and War of the Vikings is our next step in establishing Paradox and Fatshark as leaders in the art of online war.”
The intensity is greater and the beards are longer in War of the Vikings, where players must band together on the battlefields of 9th and 10th Century England and fight to conquer or defend Britannia. Environments, weapons, and visuals drawn from Viking Age history will immerse players in a bloody new conflict between the Vikings and the Saxons, with each warrior hand-designed by its player from a wide variety of customization options. Built on skill-driven gameplay and a deep combat system, War of the Vikings will bring close combat closer than ever.
War of the Vikings features:
  • History Comes to Life (and then you kill it) – Historically inspired content from the Viking Age, including levels and environments, weapons, helmets, shields, and heraldry
  • Close Combat and Ranged Ravaging – Skill-driven fighting blends swinging, blocking, and dodging with intense ranged combat, including arrows, spears, and throwing axes
  • Mod Your Squad – Enhanced squad features allow players to define a role for their warriors in battle using custom squad perks to buff your hirdmen
  • A Viking to Your Liking – Design your own Viking or Saxon warrior, choosing everything from weapons and armor to battle perks, customized taunts to unhinge your foes, and a variety of beard options
  • Pick Your Battles – Game modes include up to 64-player epic battles, new hardcore “Pitched Arena” mode with 32 players and no respawns, and a Training Ground to test out new character builds

War of the Vikings is scheduled to release in Q1 2014.

FIFA 14 - Pure Shot, Real Ball Physics Trailer

Pure Shot will let FIFA fans feel what it is like to connect with the perfect strike while a brand new ball physics system called Real Ball Physics will ensure the trajectory of the ball behaves as it would in real life. The combination of Pure Shot and Real Ball Physics will open the door for the most rewarding and varied shot selection in the FIFA franchise to date.
Pure Shot was developed to enable players to feel the same emotion of scoring great goals in FIFA 14 that your favorite striker does on Saturday mornings. The best goals are a combination of perfect timing, anticipation, and great positioning. Fans will be rewarded for all three in FIFA 14.  Players now adjust their approach angle when the shot is started looking for a more suitable angle for hitting the ball. They also understand the phases of shooting and will adjust their stride and pace to hit the ball.
Players will try to set up for the best possible shot, but that will vary depending on where they are on the pitch and how the ball is delivered to their feet. Players will take what is available to them and that may mean taking an off-balanced shot or taking a rushed shot which can hinder the accuracy and strength of their attempt. New animations will support this and the foot sliding, skipping and scissor legs that can be seen in FIFA 13 will be eliminated.
Along with changes to the shooting system, the ball in FIFA 14 acts as it would in real world football, thanks to authentic ball physics based on new formulas which dictate the flight path and trajectory of a shot. Both were overhauled for FIFA 14 to match how the ball moves in space.  This opens the door to more shot options. Players will now be able to strike the ball with force from distance, drill low rising shots with accuracy, and blast dipping, or swerving shots. There are also turbulence effects. None of this was ever possible in FIFA 13.

Pure Shot and Real Ball Physics are bound to make every shot attempt feel real and, when players connect with the perfect strike, exhilarating. Players will truly experience the emotion of scoring great goals.

FIFA 14 is coming to current-gen consoles and PC on September 27, 2013.
