Batman Arkham Origins "Invisible Predator Online" Multiplayer Trailer

When it launches in October 25th, Batman: Arkham Origins will be the first chapter in the critically acclaimed Arkham series to feature multiplayer. Entitled Invisible Predator Online, the mode is not being developed by WB Montreal but rather by UK studio Splash Damage.

In the mode, players can take on the role of one of three different groups: The Heroes (Batman and Robin) Bane's Elite Thugs (up to three players) and Jokers Elite Thugs (up to three players). Those who play the heroes group will get an experience similar to the single player campaign, with the exception that the enemies you encounter will by other players as opposed to NPC's and you will not be able to engage in fisticuffs though you will stay have access to Batman's gadgets. The objective is to utilize stealth and takedowns to fill an intimidation meter which will cause both groups to retreat.
"We wanted this tension with the hunter/hunted mechanic," says Creative Director at Splash Damage Alastair Cornish. "If Batman's primary method of engagement was to just run in and club people, a) that's not very Batman and b) it's not that tense or rewarding.

"So we worked out a clever system with the scoring, so you would vary your takedowns and be patient and not just go in swinging, because that's not Batman. The whole idea is to instill fear and intimidation into players."

While controlling the other two groups, the game morphs into a third-person shooter where both enemy factions are trying to take out the other while avoiding the hero characters. They will be able to use a detective vision tool similar to Batman, and if certain conditions are met the group leader (Bane or Joker) will be come playable. During a match, the group leader will call their followers to enter into the arena and whoever makes it there first assumes of the leader character. These characters are more powerful than the thugs, but can be killed and do not respawn.

Cornish stated that those who play as the thug characters will be able to customize their features in areas such as body type, facial hair, weapons, face paint and clothing.

"It really came from thinking of the Invisible Predator Online and what that might be like," he said. "So the heroes' perspective was quite straightforward in terms of how they play, [but with the thugs], sometimes you can see things moving behind you just as Batman is about to grab you."

"It's been interesting seeing people behaving like the AI," Cornish said. "We had players working through a map as a team, and the guy at the front said to his teammates, 'OK, I've got the front. You've got my back, right?' And his teammate said, 'Right. Can you see anything?' "No, I can't see anything.' And they kept walking through a corridor and the guy at the front said, 'You still got my back, right? Guys? Guys?' And just as he turned around he saw the feet of his buddy zip up into the darkness as Batman did the inverted takedown.

"All hell broke loose and he just freaked out and started running everywhere. When we saw that, we thought, that's absolutely perfect."
